NEW COVID INFORMATION: Beginning in September, HICAP will again offer LIVE In-Person Welcome to Medicare classes. We also continue to offer LIVE Welcome to Medicare class via Zoom Video Conferencing. In both live classes you can interact with the instructor and ask questions. We continue to offer self-paced online Welcome to Medicare videos. All classes are specifically designed for Contra Costa residents.

Our Welcome to Medicare class offers up-to-date information about Medicare plans and supplements. Scroll down for schedule choices. We also offer a self-paced online version of our Welcome to Medicare class.

Welcome to Medicare is a free HICAP class designed for those new to Medicare.


You will learn the following:

  • When and how to enroll in Medicare
  • Basic Medicare benefits and costs
  • Medicare alphabet soup and what A-B-C-D means
  • Medicare supplemental (Medigap) plans
  • Medicare Advantage plans (HMOs)
  • Prescription drug plans
  • Coordination with other health insurance including employer plans, retirement plans, VA, and COBRA

Our Welcome to Medicare class is popular. Registration is required for class attendance. No products are sold or endorsed.

NOTE: Occasionally the schedule will change due to counselor or location availability. Please register for a class to confirm the correct date and time.

LIVE Classes via ZOOM Video Conferencing

Live Welcome to Medicare, via ZOOM, requires you to have a computer, laptop, tablet, or smart phone in order to connect to the class. You do NOT need a camera or microphone. You will receive information on how to connect to the class, via e-mail, once you have registered. The class is approximately one hour long.

Drive East on Willow Pass Road from Central Concord (Todos Santos Plaza). Turn left on Port Chicago Highway. Pass Salvio St., Pacheco St., and turn right on Bonifacio St. Make the first left onto Parkside Circle. You will enter Baldwin Park. The Senior Center will be on the right about halfway around Parkside Circle. Note that Parkside Circle is a one-way road.
